VoIP, WHAT'S THAT

Residential VoIP service is growing ever more popular. But customers appear highly confused about what they are buying and how the technology operates. Furthermore, significant security threats loom on the horizon.

A new report from research firm IDC predicts that U.S. residential VoIP subscribers will hit 27 million by the end of 2009, up from an estimated 3 million this year. Price will drive this high adoption rate, at least initially, but the more robust calling features VoIP offers will become a more dominant factor as carriers educate consumers about the technology.

Will Stofega, senior analyst in IDC's VoIP Services Research Program, notes that carriers and equipment vendors "need to plan for a marathon" because the market still is in an early stage of development.

Furthermore, carriers need to proactively educate and market the value of VoIP to avoid a bloody price war. So far, the technology is marketed primarily by price; Stofega notes that AT&T (with its ad campaign for CallVantage service) is the only VoIP service provider emphasizing features, not merely price.

"The winners will use the flexibility of IP to design services that differentiate themselves from their competitors," says Stofega. VoIP's main challenge, he adds, is to "prove that it is just a cheap replacement for POTS service."

All well and good. However, service differentiation might not prove so easy because there's already plenty of confusion about VoIP in the marketplace. A second research report, this one conducted by IQ Research and Consulting on behalf of SunRocket, a Virginia-based VoIP service provider, finds that although consumer awareness about VoIP has grown, only half of consumers realize that Internet phone calls can be made using a standard telephone.

Other interesting findings: Only 47% understand that Internet phone calls don't go through their computer; only 44% realize a technician isn't required to activate IP phone service; and only about 20% know that no special computer software is required to activate VoIP service.

"This survey ... reveals that despite significant progress, most consumers still don't realize how easy it is to use Internet phone service at home," concludes Joyce Dorris, SunRocket's co-founder.

And if all this isn't enough to roil the VoIP marketplace, security experts are warning that the technology poses a credible security threat. Dave Endler, recently elected head of the VoIP Security Alliance (VoIPSA), warns that threats to voice networks from viruses, Trojans and worms are increasing.

And David Lacey, director of information security for the U.K.-based Royal Mail Group, recently warned a security gathering in London that using one network for both voice and data makes enterprises particularly vulnerable and could trigger an electronic "Pearl Harbor-type event" by the end of 2007.

visit bali island, the paradise of indonesia

I first visited the island of Bali in Indonesia almost four decades ago. We stayed at Denpasar, the capital where, if I remember correctly, there was only one decent hotel on the beach owned by the Japanese. We drove around the island on narrow streets through lush green terraced rice fields and quiet, picturesque villages where clear streams cascaded, and along the only paved street to visit the numerous Hindu temples which are distinguished both for their discrete architecture and religious rituals. Rows of women elegantly dressed in sarongs, gracefully balancing on their heads pyramids of exquisitely arranged baskets of fruits and flowers, moved gracefully towards the shrines. It was indeed an arcadian land.

Since then Bali has been discovered by tourists from all over the globe, especially their southwesterly neighbour Australia. The entire face of the island has altered dramatically with booming tourist resorts, increased urban settlements, and, of course, both permanent and transitory population straining the island's natural resources and beauty. An indication is the fact that in December 2007, as I write this column, some 11,000 people from 187 countries have gathered in airconditioned comfort in Nusa Dua (a peninsula that certainly was not on the tourist map when we first visited the island) for ten days for a global climate change conference. On Christmas day a friend sent the following message from Bali: "It is ironic the environmentalists chose Bali. Lucky I am not driving that tour bus. I could show them the devastation of the ecology Indonesian style. It is a pity what has happened there. They probably won't venture too far from their five star hotels."

Perhaps Bali was selected deliberately as the venue to discuss the fate of the planet and all its sentient beings. For if indeed global warming, greenhouse emissions, and climate change are established facts, which seems to be the consensus in the scientific community and consistent with the report of the UN panel on climate change (headed by an Indian Dr R.K. Pachauri) that shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace with Al Gore, then the entire world is in trouble. It is clear that as a consequence of the catastrophe that Al Gore predicts there will not be much left for the poor, or for that matter for the rich, in a couple of generations, to inherit. In any event, even as the politicians wrangled over ten days to finally reach the tame consensus that they will meet again a couple of years from now, the media was reporting the disappearance of the rainforest in other islands of the Indonesian archipelago and the threat to our nearest cousin the Orang-utan in Borneo. (Incidentally orang-utan literally means "men of the forest" and in Indian languages too apes are generally referred to as vanmanush which has the same meaning.) Indeed, the rapid disappearance of the rainforests of the Indonesian archipelago as well as the Amazon basin in South America contributes more to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming than the emissions from all the functioning internal combustion engines on the planet. The two together are a lethal combination.

True, the United States is the leading culprit in its insatiable appetite for the consumption of fossil fuel, but we are told that both China and India are rapidly catching up. Despite the Americans' culpability, there is a consensus building in the States among the public, the environmental activists, and the state governments that urgent and aggressive action must be taken if we are to resolve the problem that is already upon us. A great deal of credit must go to Al Gore for making the commercially and globally successful movie An Inconvenient Truth which converted even the diehard sceptics.

However, the developed countries cannot by themselves solve the crisis without the cooperation of the developing behemoths like China and India--a combined population of two billion plus with their voracious appetite for energy and consumerism. We cannot take cover under the blanket of poverty to complacently aggravate the situation. Economic growth and reduction of greenhouse gases must learn to march together in harmony, with sustainable technology. It is not enough simply to put cheaper cars on the substandard Indian roads. They must at the same time be fuel-efficient with reduced toxic emissions. Does it make any sense to concentrate only on eradicating poverty, if there is no clean air or water to sustain life?

India was once a richly forested land and forests have played a significant role in the development of what is distinctive Indian culture. Indeed, in few other civilizations have the forests, the rivers, and the mountains contributed so much to enrich the Indian mind. Many in India would like us to use the Vedas to rejuvenate our society and our souls by reviving the spiritual values enunciated so eloquently by the ancient sages in the Vedic poems, but in practice we do little or nothing to preserve our forests or clean up our rivers.

Travel, vacation, holiday, to bali Indonesia nice a land

What you think about Bali, Traveling to Indonesia is definitely a trip you will never forget.Plan for a long ride to get there, as it is a 31 hour flight from New York. Bali is a wonderful area with an array of fun filled activities to choose from. It is the main tourist area of Indonesia.

The people of Bali are very friendly, and enjoy having visitors come to their area. Many speak English to interact with tourists. They have chosen to preserve their culture for all to see rather than change it to become like other countries. The beaches are a main attraction with surfing being one of the most popular activities. Others enjoy renting a boat for the day to relax on the open waters.

Lodging in Bali ranges from small bungalows to huge fancy hotels, all with basic accommodations to meet the needs of tourists. The view from your hotel will be wonderful because of the rich beauty of the area regardless of where you choose to stay.

The people of Bali are very artistic. They enjoy painting, weaving, carving, basket making, and other arts. Children are taught art from a very early age. They often display their makings to sell to the tourists.

Temples are a main attraction in Bali. They are called Pura. The temples provide an opportunity to explore religion and art of the culture. The people of Bali are still very religious, and it is very important that those visiting the Temples show respect for their religious beliefs.

Art galleries exhibit creative and attractive art work to view. Wildlife and nature reserves are popular in Bali. Many people go to get a glimpse of the very dangerous Komodo Dragon, a large lizard that is found only in the area and is extinct. The rare Java tiger is also displayed.

There are more than 400 volcanoes in Indonesia, 128 are still active. They offer a historical view of this natural creation to observe. Botanic Gardens are also a very popular attraction. Displaying flora and fauna as well as promoting conservation, people are drawn to the beauty of such attractions.

While Indonesia is a beautiful and serene place to visit, it is strongly advised at this time to be cautious with such visits due to the possibility of terrorist attacks. If you do choose to travel to the area do not travel alone and make sure you have registered with the US Embassy.

7 tips for effective listening: productive listening does not occur naturally. It requires hard work and practice - Back To Basics - effective listeni

TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT THEIR job, internal auditors must be able to write, speak, and listen effectively. Of these three skills, effective listening may be the most crucial because auditors are required to do it so often. Unfortunately, listening also may be the most difficult skill to master.

Effective listening is challenging, in part, because people often are more focused on what they're saying than on what they're hearing in return. According to a recent study by the Harvard Business Review, people think the voice mail they send is more important than the voice mail they receive. Generally, senders think that their message is more helpful and urgent than do the people who receive it.

Additionally, listening is difficult because people don't work as hard at it as they should. Listening seems to occur so naturally that putting a lot of effort into it doesn't seem necessary. However, hard work and effort is exactly what effective listening requires.

Internal auditors must listen to explanations, rationales, and defenses of financial practices and procedures. They are constantly communicating with fellow employees whose backgrounds range from accounting to finance to marketing to information systems. In addition, explanations by fellow employees of any "unusual" practices often pose a significant challenge to an internal auditor's listening skills. Auditors can use the following techniques to improve these skills.

1. CONCENTRATE ON WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING. When listening to someone, do you often find yourself thinking about a job or task that is nearing deadline or an important family matter? In the middle of a conversation, do you sometimes realize that you haven't heard a word the other person has said? Most individuals speak at the rate of 175 to 200 words per minute. However, research suggests that we are very capable of listening and processing words at the rate of 600 to 1,000 words per minute. An internal auditor's job today is very fast and complex, and because the brain does not use all of its capacity when listening, an auditor's mind may drift to thinking of further questions or explanations rather than listening to the message at hand. This unused brainpower can be a barrier to effective listening, causing the auditor to miss or misinterpret what others are saying. It is important for internal auditors to actively concentrate on what others are saying so that effective communication can occur.

2. SEND THE NONVERBAL MESSAGE THAT YOU ARE LISTENING. When someone is talking to you, do you maintain eye contact with that person? Do you show the speaker you are listening by nodding your head? Does your body language transmit the message that you are listening? Are you leaning forward and not using your hands to play with things? Most communication experts agree that nonverbal messages can be three times as powerful as verbal messages. Effective communication becomes difficult anytime you send a nonverbal message that you're not really listening.

3. AVOID EARLY EVALUATIONS. When listening, do you often make immediate judgments about what the speaker is saying? Do you assume or guess what the speaker is going to say next? Do you sometimes discover later that you failed to interpret correctly what the speaker was telling you? Because a listener can listen at a faster rate than most speakers talk, there is a tendency to evaluate too quickly. That tendency is perhaps the greatest barrier to effective listening. It is especially important to avoid early evaluations when listening to a person with whom you disagree. When listeners begin to disagree with a sender's message, they tend to misinterpret the remaining information and distort its intended meaning so that it is consistent with their own beliefs.

4. AVOID GETTING DEFENSIVE. Do you ever take what another person says personally when what her or she is saying is not meant to be personal? Do you ever become angry at what another person says? Careful listening does not mean that you will always agree with the other party's point of view, but it does mean that you will try to listen to what the other person is saying without becoming overly defensive. Too much time spent explaining, elaborating, and defending your decision or position is a sure sign that you are not listening. This is because your role has changed from one of listening to a role of convincing others they are wrong. After listening to a position or suggestion with which you disagree, simply respond with something like, "I understand your point. We just disagree on this one." Effective listeners can listen calmly to another person even when that person is offering unjust criticism.

5. PRACTICE PARAPHRASING. Paraphrasing is the art of putting into your own words what you thought you heard and saying it back to the sender. For example, a subordinate might say: "You have been unfair to rate me so low on my performance appraisal. You have rated me lower than Jim. I can do the job better than him, and I've been here longer." A paraphrased response might be: "I can see that you are upset about your rating. You think it was unfair for me to rate you as I did." Paraphrasing is a great technique for improving your listening and problem-solving skills. First, you have to listen very carefully if you are going to accurately paraphrase what you heard. Second, the paraphrasing response will clarify for the sender that his or her message was correctly received and encourage the sender to expand on what he or she is trying to communicate.

how Transition From Female To Male

IN THIS WORK I INTERROGATE MY LOCATION AS PHOTOGRAPHER while making pictures of Jake as he transitioned from female to male. At the time Jake asked me to photograph his sex change in 1996, his name was Deb. Having never heard of gender dysphoria, the state of mind which characterizes the desire for gender reassignment, I was naive about the complexity or intensity of the process. What part did my own subjectivity, as a fiftyish black heterosexual woman from the Southeast, play in constructing images of a thirtyish white Midwestern lesbian who was working to become a heterosexual man?

The concept of changing one's identity was not new to me. While growing up I'd heard stories about slaves escaping to become "free" and light skinned blacks "passing" for white. In 1848, a woman named Ellen Craft did both. In her husband's 1860 narrative about their journey, he wrote, "It occurred to me that, as my wife was nearly white, I might get her to disguise herself as an invalid gentleman, and assume to be my master, while I could attend as his slave, and that in this manner we might effect our escape. For the Crafts, crossing the Mason Dixon line was contingent on Ellen successfully crossing the boundaries of black to white, slave to owner, woman to man and wife to master.

The history of "passing," its assumption of fraudulently trespassing, and its question of authenticity seemed to parallel Jake's quest. But from the stories he told me about middle class life in Indiana and his parents' opposition to ending defacto (by practice) racial segregation in the public schools he attended, I got the impression that he did not relate his situation to that of blacks.

Even before the Civil Rights Movement was being shaped in the 1950s, my mother had made "the fight for racial equality" part of our lives. I never forgot my feelings of rage when the confessed kidnappers of Emmett Till were acquitted. He was the fourteen-year-old black boy who was beaten, shot in the head and thrown in the Tallahatchie River because he spoke to a white woman in Money, Mississippi. This event is just one of many which marks my work.

Although Jake's act had its own value and meaning, it was not my issue and I was wary of the ethical and political violence inherent in "speaking for others." On top of that, Jake wanted to be the kind of man who embraced patriarchal and misogynistic values.

Why would I, a black feminist, choose to work with a person who had Jake's values? The answer lies in having always lived and worked with people who are racist and/or sexist. Within this was formed my blueprint for self-destruction and survival. Grudgingly I have had to admit that each of us is more complicated than our "labels" would imply. Admittedly, I had a hard time understanding why Jake could not remain the masculine female which he had been, but I halfway understood the impulse to want to fit into the mainstream culture.

From the beginning I felt conflicted in my role as a documentary photographer. For one thing it was not my field of work. In order to understand and perhaps resolve being at odds in my role as the interpreter of Jake's process, I taped our dialogues, researched transsexuality and maintained a personal journal. My photographic objective was to show the body's physical alterations. I saw my 4 x 5 view camera as a tool to create visual evidence of the body's transformation.

In our second photo shoot, I asked Jake to disrobe. Since he had seemed so relaxed, his discomfort in undressing in front of the camera threw me off a bit. Embarrassed to see his agonizing self-consciousness, I felt thrust into the role of voyeur. I averted my gaze, gave him some privacy by not looking straight at him. Thinking reflection, reflecting, I turned my camera towards the dresser mirror.

That session was probably the most difficult one for Jake. Mine would come later. Afterwards I realized that in order to photograph .Jake, I would have to be able to look, to see, to open my mind. I would have to struggle to be the voyeur, to hold my gaze and to confront and overcome the taboos and conventions that "nice colored girls" don't do or ask about, look at, or think about certain things across racial lines.

On the day that Jake had his double mastectomy, I wrote in my journal: "I will shoot her tonight. Now that the time has come I am terrified, ambivalent, no, horrified, about her cutting out her female body parts. Somehow it feels like it's my body, like it's being done to me. Will I be able to follow through?"

The next day I wrote, "As she began removing her shirt, I thought, 'I hope I don't get sick.'"

After working together three and a half months. I felt unsure about the nature of the relationship. I also became conscious of mediating between the perceived fiction and the reality of the transformative process. I wanted to deromanticize it and to show both Jake's struggles and triumphs. My journal revealed my shift to empathize with and support him.

When Jake came out of surgery on his genitalia, he looked like he was in so much pain that I could not make myself take a photograph. I waited for him to feel better. After two and a half months he finally admitted that he had been in tremendous pain since the silicon balls were inserted. I began to notice his despair. I did not want him to quit, so I began taking photographs again. I shifted my photographic goal and my camera to 35 mm in order to put more of a human face on what was becoming Jake's new body.

Bali Villa Rental Tips and Tricks

If like me, you have been bitten by the 'Holiday Villa Bug', you will already know that no hotel can match the privacy and luxury of a good Villa Holiday. The great news is that today there are even more villa rental options out there than ever before. Not to mention the fact that if you know how to choose the right holiday rental villa you will be saving a lot of money in comparison to the same level of service in a comparable quality hotel.

It seems that no where in the world has seen as big an explosion of luxury fully serviced holiday villas, as the island of Bali in Indonesia.

OK, I happen to be blessed with a great line of work, as a Travel Writer, and have been lucky enough to stay in some of the best tropical resorts around the world, especially in Asia. But still for me, nothing compares to the peace, luxury and delights (not to mention the cost effectiveness) of staying in a good serviced villa in Bali.

So, what makes a 'good holiday villa'?

Like everyone else, I have learned how to choose the perfect villa through luck, some mistakes and sheer experience.

Here are my top tips for choosing the right villa in Bali for your next Bali holiday.

Location-Location-Location

This sounds obvious, but it is not always easy to make the right location decision when we are sat at home, far away from our holiday destination.

Like every other world-class holiday destination, Bali offers a range of options, from 'central' locations, to those which offer 'absolute tranquility'.

I personally like a balance between the two. On a Bali villa holiday, the last thing one needs is to be sooo central that you feel like you are an extension of a night club's base unit till wee hours of the morning. On the other hand, I really don't want to be more than 15-20 minutes away from where the restaurants, shops and the action is. I like my villa to be certainly quiet, preferably amongst rice fields, but at the same time accessible (within 30 minutes of the airport, and a few minutes from the action).

The great thing is that Bali caters for all of these tastes.

Those seeking a central location, with a lively night life may want to look into Legian and Seminyak, (I exclude Kuta area from this list, as there are hardly any proper rental villas left in this bustling tourist centre).

Those who don't mind a bit of a trek, and don't want to go out and about much during their holiday, may opt for areas such as Uluwatu or Canggu and beyond.

For me the perfect choice is Kerobokan and Umalas areas. Quiet rural environment, surrounded by rice terraces and real villagers going about their real daily routines (instead of trying to push you a handicraft (Kuta) or pull you into a restaurant you really couldn't care for (Seminyak)).

Quality and Availability of Service

Now this is an area where villas differ from each other immensely. In Bali most villas proclaim to be 'fully serviced'. However, how 'fully' and how 'serviced' range from the most basic to being totally pampered.

A good villa should provide a guest to total staff ratio of nearly 1 to 1, or at least 1.5 to 1. So, if you are a group of 8 you should be looking at, at least, 5-6 full time staff, or for a group of 4 at least 3-4 full time staff. Sounds ostentatiously high? It really isn't once you consider the effort it takes to keep a holiday villa, its gardens, and the pool in a tip-top shape.

Of course, quantity is never the only answer. The staff needs to be full-time and fully-trained at a professional level. There are too many villas out there, which are run by 'part-time' managers and staff who actually have other full time jobs elsewhere!

Your Own Chef

One of the great pleasures of traveling to a foreign destination is to experiment with and experience the local cuisine. And what better place to experience this, than in the comfort of your own villa!

So, make sure that your villa comes with its own Chef. Once you have tasted the delights of enjoying home cooking in your own villa, you will probably not want to venture out to restaurants at all. The best thing is, having your own private villa Chef in Bali, is substantially cheaper than eating out.

However, make sure to check how the Chef arrangement works.

Ideally, the Chef cost should be included in your rental rate. In this case all you have to pay for are the cost of the ingredients which are purchased for you, typically at the local market/supermarket prices, with no mark-up. So, financials of eating at your own villa becomes just like eating at home, but without lifting a finger, and at substantially lower Bali prices.

Some villas claim to offer a Chef service, but charge restaurant/hotel prices for each dish that the chef prepares for you. I prefer to avoid these, as I can always pop out to a restaurant if I so wished anyway.

So, check to make sure that the Chef is part of your villa team, and that you will not be charged incrementally for food on a per item basis.

Your Villa Manager

A professional Villa Manager makes a huge difference to your enjoyment of your holiday. Even if you have been to Bali many times before, a good Villa Manager can be a much valued life-line, a great source of shopping tips, and a problem solver. A good villa manager can provide a wealth of directions/advice, from where to eat, to which river to choose for your white-water rafting adventure in which season, or where the cheapest golf courses are, to which temples to visit to see which local ceremonies.

Needless to say, they should also be managing the villa team, and making sure that the quality of service and cleanliness are never compromised.

Before I book a villa in Bali, I always check to see what the Villa Manager arrangement is like, and that there is a full time Villa Manager on site at the villa I am planning to rent. Typically, for good villas, you can expect to have your own dedicated Villa Manager, or have a Villa Manager who is working at 2-3 adjacent villas. However, if a Villa Manager is expected to look after 5-6+ villas, then you are most likely not going to see him for more than a few minutes a day, only during his courtesy visits (at best), so you loose out on the real benefits of having the inside-track.

Villa Quality & Upkeep

Be very, very weary of any rental villas which can not provide you with more than at least 20 recent photos of the property. These photos should show you not only the outside of the buildings, but also the living/dining areas, as well as insides of bedrooms.

If you are not provided with a sufficient number of photos giving you a clear idea of the property, then it is quite likely that there is something substantially wrong with the property, such as a building overlooking it, an abattoir next door, or at the least peeling paintwork or missing fixtures/furniture.

Remember, not all villas are created equal. But additionally, not all villas are kept and maintained equally well. It is your right to request and see these photos of the property.

Mod-Cons

OK, you are planning to stay on a tiny island, in the middle of the tropics. What mod-cons should you expect?

From own experience, I would suggest that even in the middle of the tropics, good Bali villas should be able to provide at least the following mod-cons:

Air-conditioning in all bedrooms

Clean, Western style kitchen -fully equipped with a fridge, microwave, electric kettle, and a coffee maker, as well as sufficient crockery and cutlery

Safe deposit box - at least one for your private villa use, and preferably one in each bedroom

TV/Satellite/DVD Player - as there will always be someone who wants to catch the news, or children who will need entertaining

Telephone - whilst many of us live attached to our mobile/cellular phones, it is important that there is a permanent phone connection at the villa, in case of emergencies

En-suite bathrooms - if you are looking at going as a family or a group of friends, you really don't want to spend your holiday in Bali queuing for the next available slot at shared facilities!

Enjoying a fully staffed and serviced villa with your own Chef may seem like an un-attainable dream in most other parts of the world. However, renting a Villa in Bali is by far one of the most cost effective ways of enjoying this beautiful island and the company of its hospitable people.

Now armed with this check-list you are ready to plan you next dream holiday in a Villa in Bali.

Like me, you will probably never want to leave, and go back to reality!

Everybody’s busy nowadays since the Christmas Season is fast approaching and many are now planning where to spend a well deserved holiday vacation with their families and loved ones. To help you out, some of our DWVC members have contributed their most exciting Christmas vacation experiences and here are the TOP 10 vacation spots that they have recommended that our clients can choose from:

I. BAHAMAS By Keith Martin
As a member of Designer Way Vacation Club (DWVC), you can have an unforgettable Christmas by booking a week’s holiday starting Monday 24th of December in Nassau either online at dwvc or by phoning your account manager at Timelinx’s reservation office. Even in December you can expect temperatures from 26°C during the day to 18°C at night and under 2” of rain throughout the whole month.
For absolute luxury the Hilton British Colonial Hotel is hard to beat. DWVC can offer a week’s bed and breakfast for two adults and two children in a Colonial room for £847. Booking through an online agent South Travel, you would be paying £1,571 for the same room and dates but excludes breakfast. DWVC is £724 or more than 45% cheaper.

The hotel may look familiar to any James Bond fans reading this, as it appeared in both Thunderball” and Never say never again”.
It is ideally located on a beautiful private beach and is situated within 5 minutes walk of Nassau’s shopping and financial centre.
The hotel offers an array of recreational facilities, including a private beach, freshwater swimming pool overlooking the ocean, full fitness centre, lush tropical gardens, non-motorized water sports, snorkelling and scuba facilities and shops. Golf is also available nearby.
The hotel also offers various bars which include, the Blue Note Club which offers a unique flavour of Jazz and other contemporary music, The Palm Court Lounge is the perfect spot within the hotel to enjoy our their famous "Time 4 Tea" in a relaxed atmosphere, Portofino is a casual restaurant located on the first floor, serves Italian favourites with a Caribbean flare, The Patio Grill And Pool Bar, whether you're sampling one of the many tropical mixtures, or diving into a tantalizing sandwich, there couldn't be a better place to be.
The rooms are decorated in tasteful Caribbean style furnishings and feature an en-suite bathroom, mini bar, oversized desk and safe.
Due to its close proximity to Florida, if you have a young family, you could combine your visit to the Bahamas with a trip to Orlando to partake in the Christmas build up at Disney and the likes. After a week or two in Orlando, most people would need a week to unwind. Again you can get net cost accommodation with DWVC and have your account manager at Timelinx book/tie in all your flights and activities.
From Nassau, cross the bridge to Paradise Island where beaches are first- class and the resort selection is excellent -- from upscale chic on stately estate grounds, to a yoga retreat, condo facilities (great for family vacations), and large luxury properties (one with a glass tunnel for viewing marine life and a low-key water park). Activity abounds at every turn. Paradise Island has an excellent golf course and its own small airport.
Grand Bahamas, with resort development at both Freeport and Lucaya, has the same features on a smaller scale. Golf, tennis, water sports and duty-free shopping are popular and plentiful. And the island moves at a leisurely pace.

II. KOS ISLAND - Sandra Patterson
Kos sits bang in the middle of the Dodecanese chain of Greek islands that hug the Turkish coast. Kos Island is about 45km long while its width varies from 2km to 11km.
This is a hugely popular resort with the British and it is a Greek island that has gone for mass market tourism is a very big way. Kos has its own airport and ferry connections.
Kos is a popular island with all nationalities, with some beautiful sandy beaches and good tavernas it’s well worth a visit.
The coast of Kos is swept by magnificent sandy beaches and the island has some of the most interesting archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.
The combination of sand and sightseeing give Kos a uniquely broad appeal, though most visitors will probably prefer island beaches to Greek history and, for an all in beach holiday, Kos must be considered one of the best of the Greek islands.
There are many empty coastal areas to be enjoyed by those who prefer to get away from the holiday crowds.

Members of DWVC (Designer Way Vacation Club) have access to net cost accommodation at numerous resorts in Kos. One such resort is the Alexandra Hotel, a weeks bed and breakfast for two in Nov would cost just £311 to members. To put that price into perspective it would cost a non member £599.90 booking through an online operator. DWVC is £288.90 or around 48% cheaper!

The hotel is an upgraded A class town hotel with high standards. The interior has recently been enlarged and redecorated in order to offer luxury and comfort to the guests. It has a conference room with 140 person capacity, pool, three modern lifts, comfortable and luxurious bar and a reception.
The Hotel Alexandra has 62 guest rooms. All rooms are equipped with a balcony, air conditioning, mini bar, coffee machine, satellite TV, safety deposit box, music, telephone and internet, WC and a hair dryer.
Breakfast is served in a buffet style. The hotel's bar is the perfect venue to enjoy a cocktail and unwind or the place to meet for a pre-dinner drink. The hotel features a fully equipped fitness centre with the best gym equipment which is complemented by a separate sauna and Jacuzzi.

III. GOLF DEL SUR - Keith Martin
Ever since it's 1987 inaugural event, a competition for professionals, the 27 greens and fairways of Golf del Sur have provided the backdrop for various international tournaments.
In 1989 they bore witness to Jose Maria Olazabal´s victory in the Open de Tenerife, a feat he repeated in 1992. The following year they watched as David Gilford won the event, as did Mark James in 1994. In 1995, Golf del Sur hosted the Shell Wonderful World of Golf tournament and its head to head battle between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.
Golf del Sur has also been the setting for two golf driving distance records, both of which were set by Britain's Karl Woodward. First he set a new record of 398 yards and then, a few months later, he managed to break the legendary 400-yard barrier with a huge stroke, which sent the ball flying 408 yards.
This Tenerife golf course, designed by Pepe Gancedo, is a thoroughly enjoyable layout in which one's attention is immediately caught by the black volcanic sand in the bunkers. The wide fairways are lined with such a wide variety of indigenous plants that, with it's palm trees and giant cactus plants, this 800 square meter course beside the Atlantic Ocean is like a veritable oasis.
Particularly difficult is the 3rd hole of the course. To the right of the wide fairway is a water hazard, behind which lies an impressive ravine with an ochre-coloured rock face, while to the left is a gaping bunker of black sand.

You can dine in the Buffet El Patio which provides a selection of meals, all served buffet style. There is also a snack bar on site, La Corbeta and a number of other bars and restaurants including Legends Bar, The Sundowner Pub and the Caddyshack. You have a choice of three swimming pools, a main pool, a smaller pool (which is heated in winter) and a children’s pool. There is also a large sunbathing deck equipped with free sunbeds for you to relax. For the more energetic there is a tennis court or table tennis.
The apartments are good sized and bright, tastefully furnished and comfortable. They have a kitchenette which comprises of hob, fridge/ freezer, cooking utensils, bathroom with bath and shower. A TV and safety deposit box can be hired at an additional cost, also cots or highchairs can be hired. All apartments have a large private balcony or terrace.
This charming resort is situated on the southern coastline and is not only a golfers paradise but is also ideal for family holidays and couples looking for a relaxing break. You can spend your days relaxing and soaking up the sun on the new pebble beach and when the sun gets too hot you can cool down with a drink from the beach bar.

There is an excellent selection of restaurants and bars here but if you are looking for something a little more lively then Playa De La Americas and Los Cristianos are a short distance away where you will find a vibrant atmosphere with everything you need for your entertainment.

IV. ALGARVE, SOUTHERN PORTUGAL Keith Martin
The Algarve, in Southern Portugal, with its year-round sunshine, miles of golden sand beaches, and picturesque villages, has become one of Europe's most popular golfing destinations. But while there are many courses suiting all abilities, the Algarve is also perfect for non golfers, especially the eastern region around Tavira, with its stunning nature walks. At the other end of the scale, resorts such as Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo are mega destinations with all the golfing and sporting options you could want. Then, in Western Algarve, around the bustling holiday destination of Albufeira, you can holiday 24/7, combining championship golf with a hectic nightlife.
Golf holidaymakers should check out the renowned Pinta, one of the best courses in the Algarve, designed to retain natural valleys and undulations.
Vale do Lobo, Portugal's biggest luxury golf and beach resort, around 20 minutes from the airport at Faro, is one of Europe's finest. Its two golf courses, the Royal and Ocean, provide stunning views of the coast, and its 5 km-long sandy beach, with dramatic red sandstone cliffs, provides non-golfers with seriously good beach and swimming options. The resort also offers tennis courts, a gymnasium and health and beauty centre, as well as restaurants and shops.
Members of DWVC (Designer Way Vacation Club) can get a weeks accommodation at Barringtons Golf and Health Spa for two from now until 31st of March 2008 for just £105.
Barringtons Golf and Health Spa is centrally located within the Vale do Lobo 1,000 acre estate, Barringtons provides the complete holiday experience. The hotel is only a short walk from the pristine golden beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and some of the best golf courses in Europe.

The hotel offers fabulous year round facilities set amidst pine trees and beautifully landscaped sub tropical gardens. Whether you want a short golfing break or a two-week holiday in the sunshine, Barringtons can tailor make your holiday to suit you, giving you a complete flexibility. When the sun goes you can relax in the Beat Bar. The Eagles Café Bar at the Barringtons Golf Academy is open for breakfast, lunch and snacks.
The accommodation combines both style and comfort. The superb décor and thoughtful design create a peaceful ambience in which guests can truly unwind. The rooms are furnished to the highest standards with its own private terrace. The bathrooms feature large showers and double sinks. Other amenities include a telephone, air conditioning, satellite TV and a private sun terrace. Plus when guests stay in the hotel's accommodation, guests have club membership which includes use of all the clubs facilities.

Unwind in the lap of luxury in the tranquil spa area featuring indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and solarium. The Barringtons Golf Academy is a great place to fine tune and to improve all aspects of your game. The covered floodlit driving range has target greens and bunkers, which add realism to practice sessions. The highly equipped gym features the latest Matrix cardio-vascular and weights equipment to cater for all training needs. The hotel also offers add-on courses such as pilates, yoga, ballroom dancing and kick boxing.
Members of DWVC also receive a 50% discount at the Royal Vale Do Lobo golf course and a 50% discount on tennis sessions.

V. BINTAN HOTEL, INDONESIA Allan Bond
To put all this to the test I choose one of the further flung resorts they have available and searched online to try to find like for like accommodation at a lower cost.
The resort I choose was the Bintan Lagoon Resort in Indonesia. It is a four star hotel on the north western shores of Bintan island.
Quality wise the resort is very nice, set in landscaped gardens and close to the beach, it offers golf courses, leisure centre, numerous bars, cafes and restaurants.

The rooms are tastefully decorated and equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV, mini-bar/fridge, safe and phone.
The cost for a weeks bed and breakfast in March for two as a member of DWVC is £441 all in.
Conducting an extensive search online, the lowest cost I could find offering the same accommodation and dates was £574 through either asia-hotels.com or hotelclub.net. DWVC is £133 or around 23% cheaper.

The savings are there as claimed and regardless of where and how often you go on holiday, everyone likes to save money. For more information on the company you can look on their website.
About DWVC (Designer’s Way Vacation Club)
A revolutionary new idea launched in 2000 as Dream Works Vacation Club, later becoming Designer Way Vacation Club when it was discovered that a very large film making company existed in the USA with a similar name; Designer Way Vacation Club is an exclusive holiday and consumer discount members club that has been growing rapidly throughout the early part of the new millennium. Real Estate Investment in a Recession

Have you ever noticed how buyers flock to purchase property in droves when real estate prices are at their peak, yet buyers are relatively scarce when prices are most affordable? Notwithstanding the fact that this occurrence defies the generally accepted investment strategy to buy low and sell high”, one can’t help but wonder why attending social gatherings during the real estate boom years of 2005 and 2006 would inevitably lead to engaging in a conversation about someone’s real estate investment and the promise of future profits to be derived from the venture. It’s not all that surprising that many of those recently boasting about their real estate exploits have softened their tone while seasoned investors, dormant for the past six or seven years, have begun to once again start purchasing lucrative investment property. Despite news about the recent real estate and financial industry tribulations that the public is seemingly bombarded with every day, the last few months of 2008 provided a relatively quiet, yet dramatic, surge in real estate sales.

The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has reported that residential home sales have increased by an astonishing 115% when the last quarter of 2007 is compared against the same period for 2008. Have the experienced investors purchasing all of this property been ignorant to the steady stream of media reports warning of declines in real estate values? The answer is no, they have simply been waiting for the right time to emerge like a small swarm of locusts to steadily reap houses for sale like crop. In fact, their buying presence has been so prominent that national housing inventories of homes for sale have significantly decreased during 2008’s final quarter, a reliable sign that demand is beginning to once again catch up with supply.

But how do these brave souls know precisely when they are buying at the bottom of the market? Do they throw caution to the wind and simply force themselves to muster the courage to purchase property despite the fact that values may continue to decline in the future? The simple answer is that savvy real estate investors do not purchase property with the expectation of immediate appreciation in value. Rather, investment real estate should be purchased based on the property’s potential for positive cash-flow. Positive cash-flow occurs when a property’s rental income exceeds the owner’s costs to maintain the property. Consequently, when a property provides a positive cash-flow, a decline in real estate prices is of little concern since the owner can simply enjoy the income his property generates until the market revives and the property can be sold for further profit.

During the real estate boom years our nation became blindly infatuated with the appreciation of real estate prices, which represents the amount of value that a property will gain over time. So called house flippers” brazenly leveraged money to buy numerous properties with the expectation that their values would increase, thus enabling them to sell the properties for handsome profits in a short period of time. These novice real estate quasi-moguls, often addicted to HGTV and other television shows created to promote the industry like Flipping Out and Flip This House, regularly failed to consider property cash-flows prior to making their purchases. Why bother when real estate values will always continue to appreciate, thereby alleviating the need to hold properties for long? After the housing bubble burst, many of these speculators realized that they shouldn’t have built their investment houses out of sticks, and social gatherings became pleasant once again.

Seasoned investors build their investments out of bricks by carefully and conservatively analyzing a property’s cash flow potential prior to purchasing. The primary reason that these investors have been sitting on the sidelines for many years is that most real estate prices have been far too high to generate positive cash-flows and a reasonable return on investment. It hasn’t been until recently that both residential and multi-family housing prices have retreated to levels where rental income will cover monthly mortgage payments and other operating costs. Further, with the construction of new housing and apartments decreasing to a virtual halt, a still rapidly growing local population, and many families displaced from foreclosed properties, an investment property’s owner is free to choose from a tenant base that is now stronger than ever. One can clearly see why a decline in real estate sales prices typically accompanies an increase in monthly rental prices.

No matter what the year 2009 holds in store for real estate investing, it is essential to remember that investing in real estate should always be considered over a long term. Although the opportunity for a quick flip” may present itself, the distinguishing benefit to sound real estate investments is their ability to provide income no matter what the economy throws your way.
